Lens fans invade pitch, clash with Lille fans during derby match
The derby match between Ligue 1 teams, Lens and Lille was held to pause after fans from both teams invaded the pitch and clashed.
The rivalry between Lens and Lille is one of the most dreaded and fearsome rivalry in French football. The first 45 minutes of the match was filled with tension as the home fans held up a banner that read “Lillios Merda” a French phrase that means “sh*t“.
The fans from the stands threw tantrums at each others during the first half of the game. Immediately the referee blew for the first half break, the fans burst out from the stands confronting each other and involving in physical collisions. The policemen on standby had to come in between the rivalled fans and put and end to the upset going on the pitch.
The second half of the match was delayed by 15 and a stadium call had to be made threatening to call of the match if the fans persist with the violence.
The fiercely hot match ended 1 – 0 with Lens defeating the reigning French Champion.
