Manchester United vs Everton preview, team news, tickets & prediction

Everton travels to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United, who are currently inconsistent and are facing the challenges of the Premier League.

Manchester United welcomes the Goodison outfit as they strive for crucial points in the fight to make the top four, while the visitors aim to climb up the table after a crushing 10-point deduction early in the season.

In their previous encounter in November, Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho scored a brilliant over in a 3-0 away victory over Everton, putting a temporary halt to United’s disastrous start to the season. However, Everton has managed to remain on the cusp of escaping relegation despite the points deduction.

Manchester United have had a fairly poor season that has been full of ups and downs. The Premier League giants were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the group stage, and even finished rock bottom of the group. Though injuries have largely been the cause of their lack of quality in personnel. The drop in form from most of the players has been earth-shattering. Erik ten Hag has been criticized for his personnel management and poor transfer decisions.

Players like Antony and Andre Onana have been marked out as poor decisions in the transfer market. The Brazilian forward has yet to hit a goal or offer an assist in all competitions. While the Cameroonian goalkeeper has been very error-strewn since his debut for the club. He can be single-handedly blamed for Man Utd’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League.

The 2023-24 season began poorly for Everton, suffering defeats in their first three matches against Fulham, Aston Villa, and Wolves. Everton secured their first point of the season against Sheffield United but could win just two in their next five games afterward.

Notably, Everton achieved their first win at the 6th attempt, with goals from James Tarkowski, Calvert-Lewin, and Abdoulaye Doucore securing a sweet victory against Brentford. Despite the huge victory, they stumbled to a home defeat to Luton Town, Everton has also suffered damaging losses to Manchester City, Wolves, and city rivals Liverpool.

Alongside Manchester United, Wolves have also defeated Sean Dyche’s team 3-0. Though this time it was at the Molineux, it was quite a rough game for the Merseyside team. Max Kilman, Matheus Cunha, and Chris Dawson proved to be the differences in the game.

Everton’s best player this season has been Abdoulaye Doucore. The France-born midfielder has scored 6 goals this season and given 2 assists. He has also hit an impressive 23 shots on target. He is a physical player with bursts of pace. He is very good in the air, and always has one or two bangers in him.

As Everton resumes their league campaign against Fulham after the winter break, Sean Dyche will aim to build momentum for a strong performance against Manchester United.

With nothing to lose, Everton must demonstrate fearlessness in their battle against relegation. While rising above the relegation zone seems like a miracle, the team remains determined to give it their best shot.

Results are crucial for Everton, emphasizing the importance of strong performances at home throughout the season.

On the other hand, Manchester United, who finished much closer to the Premier League pinnacle in the 2022-23 season, thought that they made strategic summer recruitments in preparation for another title pursuit. However, the season has started on a rather forlorn note. The league campaign commenced with a hard-fought 1-0 home victory against Wolves showcasing the fighting spirit needed for the entire season.

They then went on a downward spiral and lost 4 out of their next six games. The rot started with a loss to Tottenham Hotspur away, then they bounced back to edge Nottingham Forest at home. However, a trip to the Emirates would prove unfruitful, and end in a 3-1 defeat. Brighton would then compound their woes.

With four wins and three losses in the next seven games, Manchester United have maintained a humpty, dumpty run in the Premier League. Despite setbacks, United have somehow managed to remain in the top half of the league table. United’s last Premier League encounter ended in a 2-2 draw at home to Spurs.

Scott Mctominay has been the surprise goal king for the Red Devils this season. The midfielder who often looks lost in the centre of the park has been quite prolific in the attacking end of the pitch. The Scot has scored 5 Premier League goals for his team. Rasmus Hojlund who went on an unending goal drought has finally found his goal-scoring boots. He has scored two Premier League goals in three games.

As they gear up for resumption after the winter break, Erik Ten Hag will hope that the full complement of his squad will be available to him, and he’ll be able to take his side out of the rubble and into the bubble for the upper echelons.

Team news

Injuries have affected both teams, with Everton’s Ashley Young and Abdoulaye Doucoure sidelined. Though Doucoure is sidelined now, he should be available for the game, and this is the same for Seamus Coleman. Manchester United’s Mason Mount looks set to return after a lengthy time out. Tyrell Malacia should also be available for the fixture.

Line-ups

Lineups are quite unstable for most teams, as they are mostly a function of player form and injuries. These are factors that can not be predicted.

As managers aim for continuity and performance, the line-ups are crucial. Everton’s potential lineup includes Pickford; Coleman, Tarkowski, Braithwaite, Mykolenko, ; Onana, Garner, Harrison; Doucoure, Calvert-Lewin, and Groeneveld.

Manchester United’s lineup may feature Onana; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Shaw; McTominay, Mainoo, Fernandes; Garnacho, Amad, Rashford.

Prediction

While Manchester United is favored to win comfortably, Everton’s fearless approach and counter-attacking prowess could make it a challenging match. Everton aims for a positive result to boost confidence, making it a tight contest where the first goal may determine the outcome.
