Meet Raphael Odogwu, the striker who wears Lukaku’s old boots

Serie B top scorer, Raphael Chidi Odogwu settles for wearing Romelu Lukaku’s old boots after the Inter Milan striker helped him beat depression.

Raphael Odogwu kicked off his career at Chievo with the team under19 side but failed to break into the senior team. He since moved across six different clubs on free transfers.

When Raphael Odogwu was at Arzignano, he suffered a career ending injury that kept him out for three years. This affected his career and the striker fell into serious depression and required a therapy to beat it.

In 2021 Odogwu’s wife in search of help to revive her husband from depression tried to contact Romelu Lukaku who was idolized by her husband. Her first effort to get Lukaku failed but she was able to get through to Lukaku through Antonio Conte’s assistant coach, Christian Stellini. (Conte was the head coach of Inter Milan then).

Lukaku who got the message of Odogwu’s wife, sent Odogwu his jerseys and old boots to boost his morale. Not long after, Raphael Odogwu healed from his injury and beat depression.

At 32-year-old, Raphael Odogwu is playing his first season in Italian Serie B and he’s his team, Sudtirol’s top scorer with eight goals. Raphael Odogwu doesn’t wear new boots, he wear the boots Lukaku gifted him when he was depressed.
