Jupp Heynckes – Bayern Munich (Four)

Jupp Heynckes managed nine different clubs in three countries including at Bayern Munich where he took charge four times. His first spell at Bayern came in 1987 after spending eight years at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

He then returned for spells in 2009, 2011 and 2017 before finally retiring.

2. Jose Mourinho – Chelsea

Probably the most popular one on the list of popular managers who managed a twice, Mourinho came to the EPL with a bang.

“Please don’t call me arrogant, I am European champion and I think I am a special one.” That is how the title came about after Mourinho took charge of his first press conference as Chelsea manager in 2004.

Two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups and four seasons later Mourinho was gone!.

José returned for his second spell after a short stint at Real Madrid and lead to the Premier League title. This time he got the sack midway through his third season in charge.

3. David Moyes

Popular managers who managed a club twice

David Moyes first took the Hammers job in 2017, after leaving Sunderland, with the club’s season on a tail spin.

He managed to guide West Ham to 13th place at the end of the season after initially meeting them in relegation places.

He failed to keep the job permanently and went without a job for 18months before being retired by Westham, who were again in relegation places with their preferred coach Manuel Pellegrini.

4. Frank Lampard

Popular managers who managed a club twice

Chelsea hired Lampard after he almost guided Derby County to Premier League promotion. Despite losing the playoff final to Aston Villa, Lampard got managerial role at Chelsea.

He faced the axe midway into his second season only to return to Chelsea as caretaker manager following a disastrous spell at Everton.

5. Roy Hodgson

After enjoying spells at Inter Milan, Liverpool, Fulham and England NT amongst others, Roy Hodgson came to his boyhood club.

He stepped down in 2021 after steering them to safety in his final season. Roy Hodgson came back to help Crystal Palace in trying times last year, after a brief stop at Watford. He was on the verge of being fired before being forced to step down after succumbing to illness.

Worthy mentions

There are managers who had at least two spells at a club. This includes John Sheridan (Oldham) and Martin Allen (Barnet) returning to their clubs at least FIVE times.

Alex Ferguson’s son, Darren, had four spells at Peterborough, same number as Graham Westley at Stevenage.

Then there is room for Fabio Capello, Kevin Keegan, Claudio Ranieri and Sir Kenny Daglish, one of Liverpool’s greatest managers. They all had two spells at their clubs.
